What is Solid Surface?
Solid surface, most commonly known by the brand Corian, is a term used to describe a variety of man-made materials commonly used for countertop installations. It is highly valued for its low maintenance, beauty, and utility and is generally lower in cost than natural stone alternatives. Solid surface is stable, nonporous, and attractive with colors and patterns consistent throughout the sheet. This consistency allows solid surface sheets to be bonded together with no visible seams, eliminating unattractive gaps where water can collect and bacteria can grow.

Solid surface is typically manufactured in sheets up to 144 inches in length, 30 inches in width and is one-half inch thick. It is made of acrylic or polyester resin combined with fillers and pigments that create unique colors and patterns and can be cut and finished much like wood. Unlike natural stone, some brands can be thermoformed by heating and bending them into molded shapes such as sinks, bathtubs, shower bases or furniture.
Its nonporous surface resists stains and provides a long-lasting finish. Best of all, solid surface material is impervious to bacteria and can be easily repaired even after years of use. These features make it the material of choice for home, food service, and healthcare applications.
